Governance advice and strategic planning

Ensuring that your governance is in good shape and that your strategy is clear are the foundations for a successful organisation. With a focus on governance Joanna brings a strong strategic background to working with boards and senior executives; shaping their strategy or improving their governance by facilitating debate, conducting appraisals and performance reviews. Her clients are not only able to develop a clear vision for their organisations but also create a receptive environment in which to make sustainable strategic change.

As a coach and facilitator Joanna works with board members, particularly chairs, chief executives and directors, in a wide variety of organisations in the South West, South Wales, and London.

Governance and strategic planning projects include:
• facilitating business planning and strategic away-days for a range of clients e.g. Avalon Community Energy, Hospiscare
• designing and implementing board-level assessment and appraisal systems for a range of clients e.g. Bath Spa University Student Union, Knightstone Housing Association, Taff Housing
• reviewing housing association governance arrangements e.g. Alliance Homes
• delivering a webinar for NUS on ‘Being the best trustee board’ to students’ union trustees and senior staff
• developing working arrangements for the group structure of Synergy Housing
• facilitating organisational development through one to one discussions and workshops e.g. Age UK Bristol
• using a ‘hot house’ approach to facilitate a service improvement project at Aster Housing Group

As a Chief Exec. of a locally owned and driven social enterprise I contacted Joanna to help us review and reinvigorate our governance structure. Working with myself and the Board she quickly analysed some of the issues we were facing and then through a small series of excellent workshops enabled the Board to understand their roles and responsibilities and then to explore what was needed in the future and how as a Board they might go about updating the organisational governance. Joanna was excellent in engaging with a wide range of members including local people and representatives from the local authority. Her ability to build relationships and demonstrate respect for everyone meant that everyone contributed and had a genuine sense of ownership for the process. From the beginning Joanna worked as a consultant in a sensitive way which blended her experience and authority whilst enabling the organisation to remain in the ‘driving seat’ throughout. The Board is now fully engaged in a thoughtful and achievable process of change. The Board members frequently cite Joanna as the key agent of change.
